Robert L. Harrington, a retired printer for the Detroit Free Press, died of cardiac arrest June 17 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was 85.
A 35-year resident of Birmingham, Mr. Harrington was born May 23, 1920, in Perrysburg, Ohio.
During World War II, Harrington was an Air Force pilot and flew on 68 missions, carrying fuel over the Himalayas from India to China, recalled his friend Ed Hamel of Eastpointe.
He worked for the Detroit Times until it ceased publication.

He then worked for the Detroit Free Press from November 1960 until his retirement in 1989.
Fred Clein, a Free Press printer, recalled that Harrington kept to himself.
"He was a real quiet guy -- never said too much."
"He was very proud of working at the paper," said Hamel.
Ann Harrington, his wife of 59 years, died in February.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
