Charles was the son of Melvin James Foster and Gertrude L. Sweet.

He resided in Coos County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 7, 1943 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted as being employed in the manufacture of paper and pulp and also as Single, without dependents.

He served as a Private, Company K, 168th Infantry, 34th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

Charles was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on September 24, 1948.

Service # 31268806

His NH death certificate lists Sept 24, 1948 under "burial" and lists place of death as "WWII Deceased". His actual death location is not listed. He was sent home four years later and is buried here with his mother and siblings.
