Joseph West Mingo, my great-grandfather, was born in northern Maine. He moved to New York City as a young man and worked as an accountant for a fur company. Ultimately, he became president of that company. He was married twice but outlived both wives. He had two daughters, Ruth and Barbara, both from his first marriage. In his retirement years, he (along with his wife, her sister and her sister's husband) ran a bed-and-breakfast on Route 1 in Calais, ME, known as the Wickachee Inn. They sold the business in the 1970s. He moved to the area with his daughter Ruth and her husband Martin Mockler (both buried nearby). He lived on his own until he was 95 and then moved to assisted living facilities. The one he stayed at the longest was in Bennington. He celebrated his 100th birthday there in December 2001, with nearly his entire family in attendance. He died eight months later, with all his faculties intact until the end.
