Dr. Cynthia Kay Williamson
Dr. Williamson died of ovarian cancer at the age of 39 on April 8, 2001. Dr. Williamson earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology in June of 1983, and her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Alabama in 1990. After completion of her graduate work, Dr. Williamson held postdoctoral appointments at Duke and Emory Universities, the National Institutes of Health, and the Army Research Laboratory. Upon completing her postdoctoral appointment at ARL, she held a temporary position at NAVSEA, then moved on to contract work at NASA's Langley Research Center in the atmospheric sciences division. Dr. Williamson also worked briefly for SAIC as a senior analytical chemist in Abingdon, MD. Dr. Williamson had accepted a Dreyfus Fellowship at the State University of New York, Stony Brook after leaving SAIC, but was unable to fill the position due to the extraordinarily rapid progression of her illness. Dr. Williamson has published in both Analytical Chemistry and Applied Optics, and gave numerous presentations at national meetings on her research. She was a versatile and talented scientist and is survived by her parents, brother, sister, and a large extended family.
