Born in Indiana in the 1800's, Anna Stanford was the eldest of six siblings. Her father Jeremiah, prior to marrying, was a veteran of the American Civil War, "mustering out" for the last time in September of 1865, after several years of military service and at least one reenlistment.

Jeremiah and his sweetheart, Catharine, wed at the beginning of 1867, and Anna was born nine months later. She would marry for the first time at the age of 18, when her baby sister Goldie was not yet two. By the time Anna was 19, she was a single mother with a daughter of her own. Tragically, her first two husbands--Charles Cartwright and James Cunningham--both died within months of their respective nuptials.

Her third marriage to David Jacobs ended in divorce, but her fourth and final marriage--to James McAfee--was a happy one, lasting almost 28 years. Like her first husband Charles, James gave Anna (or Annie as he affectionately called her) a daughter. (There were almost 20 years between half-sisters Mary McAfee and Orpha Cartwright, who died just three years after Mary was born.) Annie survived her husband by more than 30 years, burying during that time four of her five siblings.

When all is told, Annie had an extraordinary life. Privileged and optimistic, she lived during the advent of planes, trains, and automobiles. (The First Transcontinental Railroad--the Pacific Railroad--was completed two years after her birth.) Brave and longsuffering, she outlived almost every single member of her immediate family, from her parents and siblings to her husbands and children.

Just after the New Year in 1958, Annie died at the ripe old age of 90. She was laid to rest at Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana, beneath the rustling leaves of the Linden trees in the good company of family. [Biography by genealogygirl]
