Harry Bookwalter was the first child of five born to John Sylvester Bookwalter and Rebecca Jane Drayer-Bookwalter-Bish. His father died at the age of 37, and he went to board with a family in Limestone, Clarion, PA. He married Lida Florence Magill on October 25, 1916 and fathered 6 children: John Donald Bookwalter (1917-1988), Thelma Mae (Bookwalter) Kindel (1918-1998), Betty Jane (Bookwalter) Smith (1919-2001), Charles Howard Bookwalter (1921-1986), William Raymond Bookwalter (1923-1952), and Mary Elizabeth (Bookwalter) Reed (1927-1997). He opperated at grist mill in Corsica, PA and was also a barber.
