Scientist. Discovered human blood groups in 1900, for which he was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Born in Baden-bei-Wein, Austria. Studied medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1891. Began research in immunology after becoming assistant to Max von Gruber at the Hygiene Institute of Vienna in 1896. Moved to the University of Vienna Institute of Pathological Anatomy in 1897, and it was there he made his discovery of the ABO blood groups. His prediction of their significance in transfusion was appreciated only gradually. With Julius Donath, in 1904, he described the antibody responsible for paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria (PCH), the first clear evidence of an autoimmune disease. He developed a method of identifying the syphilis-causing bacteria Treponema pallidum using dark-field microscopy. He was the first to successfully infect monkeys with polio, leading to his discovery that polio was caused by a virus. He investigated how small chemical alterations could influence antibody specificity and showed that substances unable to elicit an immune response on their own could do so if attached to other substances, to which he applied the term "hapten". Married Leopoldine Helene Wlasto, an actress, in 1916. He left Vienna in 1919, moving first to The Netherlands, then in 1922, to New York City, where he joined the staff of the Rockefeller Institute. There, with Philip Levine, he discovered additional blood groups M, N and P in 1927. Experiments with Alexander Wiener in the late 1930s led to discovery of the Rh blood group.
Author of the text The Specificity of Serological Reactions (1933) (second edition 1945).
