Israel Rupe Civil War
•
• Israel Rupe and his brother Martin were in Co A 7th Cav. Iowa. They were stationed in Fort Kearney, Neb. from 17 Sept,1862 to 24 Nov, 1865. They were sent west during the civil war to patrol the Oregon trail along the Platte River because the troops out west were sent east at the start of the war. During the winter of 1864, Martin froze to death and Israel's feet were frostbitten. In an Indian battle in Colorado, Israel was shot in the hip with an arrow and he stood too close to a cannon and lost his hearing and was given some medicine which temporarily caused him to go blind. All this info comes from his pension papers.
Israel Rupe and wife are buried in Riverview Cem. Kay county,Oklahoma west of Tonkawa, Oklahoma.
