James was the son of Charles and Julia (Carroll) Swift. His parents were born in Delaware. In 1917 James was working as a clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad. James Erwin Swift and Ellen Theresa Kane were married January 30, 1918 in Wilmington, Del. James was killed in action in World War I. Ella Theresa (Kane) Swift, a widow, and Richard Rolland Johnson were married June 20, 1920 in Wilmington, Del.

His marker appears to have incorrect years for both his birth and death. The marker has his year of death as 1921, but then notes "(killed in action in WW I)". His marker has his year of birth as 1897, but he gave his date of birth as April 17, 1894 on his 1917 draft registration card, and that is consistent with 1900 and 1910 census data.
