Mary was born in Holland, Michigan, the daughter of Gustav Zech and Julianna (Witt). When her mother died, her father married Josephine Linn. When she died, Mary was placed in a children's home where she was badly treated. Her father finally brought the children home and ended up marrying his housekeeper, Anna (Lund Gillette), because Anna did not want to see the children go back into the home. Mary married Gillette George Gillette on May 6, 1929, in Grand Rapids, and they made their home in Decatur. She helped her husband on their farm, and was devoted to her family. She is survived by three daughters, Irene (William) Garrod, Donna (Frank) Henley, and Carolynn Victoria (Herb) Smith; one son, Jerry (Janice) Gillette; three grandchildren; one sister, Elsa Zech Gillette; and two brothers, Carl Zech and Paul Zech. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an infant son, Gene Gillette.
