Emily was the daughter of Henry Hansell Wilson and Marianne (Mary Anne) O'Neill, of Dublin, Ireland. Henry was a copperplate engraver who possibly started with letterhead and stationary, but by the time he retired held a career as a banknote engraver.

The family moved from Dublin to London in about late 1873 with their three children (Georgina, Emily and Henrietta), possibly in search of employment for Henry. Within their first year in England a forth child was born but by Christmas of 1875, the three youngest (including Emily) all caught Scarlet Fever and passed away.

The three children were buried in a shared grave in Abney Park. A simple marker may have existed at one time, but none seem to have survived.
Henry and Marianne had a total of 11 (known) children.
