(Enlisted Nov. 21, 1863)


A 43 year-old Plymouth, MA Tailor and father of nine children, John enlisted in the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on Aug. 5, 1861 and was mustered on August 24th as a Private in Co. H. He was discharged on February 24, 1862 due to physical disability caused by poor eyesight.

He enlisted for a second time on Nov. 21, 1863 and was mustered as a Private on Dec. 7, 1863 in Co. H, 2nd Mass. Heavy Artillery. On April 20, 1864, Companies G and H, under heavy attack from Confederate forces at Plymouth, NC, surrendered 275 men. Known as the Plymouth Pilgrims, the two companies were held enmass at Andersonville and suffered an extraordinarily high mortality rate. John held on until September 19, 1864 when he succumbed to Scorbutis.
