Darren Jay Smith, 46, left this Earth on June 12, 2013, after a battle against cancer. This fight took him from us way too soon. Born August 23, 1966, to Claudia and Verel Smith, Darren grew up in Idaho Falls. As the oldest of 5 children, Darren took it upon himself to teach his brothers and sister both toughness and kindness. Rough and tough as a kid, his family still knew that he loved them and would lead them.

This became more evident as an adult. Darren was the first in his family to find the love of learning and sought knowledge and understanding of things both spiritual and secular. Darren worked hard, burning his candle at both ends. While providing for his family Darren worked and studied his way through college and graduate programs earning degrees in Political Science and Business, with his most recent pursuits in Nursing. More than knowing, Darren loved to share his understanding with others. Family and friends alike benefited from his association throughout his life.

It was above all that Darren adored his wife and children. Darren married Jana Diann Hinckley on October 8, 2004. He was a kind, loving husband and friend to her. Darren gave himself to his sons Benton and Haden and his daughters Katherine and Madeline. Patiently, he taught his boys to be strong and courageous; to do what is necessary to help others, and most important to be true to themselves. To his girls, he gave them love. Katie and Maddie brought Darren the opportunity to show his greatest attributes, gentleness and charity.

Darren approached his battle with cancer the same way he lived his life, with quiet resolve. He was strong for his family and laughed to the end. Darren is survived by his wonderful wife, Jana, and his children: Benton, Haden, Katherine and Madeline; his mother and father, Claudia and Verel; his brothers and sisters: David, Jared, Jordan and Robyn with their families, and all of his loving nieces and nephews.
