Charles Neal Goff, 70, of Caldwell, went to be with his Lord Friday morning, June 20, 2003, surrounded by his family at the VA Hospital in Boise. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. today, June 24, at Canyon Hill Cemetery with a memorial service at 11 a.m. to be held at Fairview Church of the Nazarene, corner of High and Fairview in Nampa. Services will be under the direction of the Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
Neal was born in McDonald County, Mo., on Aug. 22, 1932, to Marion Lee and Doshie Elizabeth Goff. He graduated from Fruitland High School in 1951 and then continued his education at the Nampa Business School in 1952. He served in the US Air Force from 1952-1956 during the Korean War. He was assigned to a weather squadron and flew into hurricanes in order to get weather-related readings. He said he always enjoyed the ride.
Neal married Joyce Elizabeth Holleman in Sacramento, Calif., on Sept. 15, 1956. He worked in the finance business for several years moving his family from Ontario and Gresham, Ore., Vallejo, Sacramento and Truckee, Calif., where he and Joyce owned and operated the Cottage Hotel. In 1970 Neal moved his family to Caldwell where he started his insurance career working for State Farm for a year before he became an independent agent working for the Shaffer-Buck agency. He started his own insurance agency in 1972 by purchasing Conley Ward's agency. He worked with Max Lewellan and then Junji Yamamoto until he changed the business name to Neal Goff Insurance Agency. He sold his business in 1994 to Rick Stoolman and it is known today as Midtowne Insurance Agency.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Cindy and Dave OldenKamp, Kathy and Duane Barnes of Caldwell; two sons, Steve and Linda Goff of Caldwell and David Goff of Bend, Ore; brothers and wives, Jim and Ethel, Dallas and Carol, Virgil and Dorothy Goff of Payette and Louis Goff of Boise; sisters and husbands, Pansy and Carl Johnson and Betty and Ernie Gentry; sister-in-law, Rosie Goff of Payette; 15 grandchildren, Geoff and Wendy OldenKamp, Josh, Michael, Meghan OldenKamp, Elizabeth and Michael Figueredo, Ben and Marissa Goff, Marie Goff, Bryan and Holly Barnes, Tyler, Kory Barnes, Chase Goff; and six great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Mackenzie Goff, Isaac OldenKamp, Rylend Barnes and two to be delivered in August and October of 2003.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Arvin and Art Goff and his sister, Alfie Goff and parents.
Neal was destined to be a coach. When his boys were not yet old enough to play, the neighborhood kids would come over and ask if Mr. Goff could come out to play baseball. Neal coached both of his sons' baseball teams as they grew up. He was a coach to many young boys from 1968 - 1977 and sponsored many Caldwell youth baseball teams. Neal and Joyce have traveled to Arizona each winter since 1979. He loved to camp and fish, especially fishing with the grandkids. He was a past member of the Kiwanis, Elks and Chamber of Commerce; he was also a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Caldwell.
A special thank you to all the past pastors and friends. Most recently he attended Fairview Nazarene with his family.
In lieu of flowers, Neal requested contributions be made to New Horizons, Inc., 615 Fairlane, Nampa, ID 83686 for Orval and Roberta Halley a missionary venture for the unreached world.
A very special thanks to the VA Hospice Extended Care unit, staff and nurses.
