DEACON HALDANE DEAD
------------------
He Was the Pioneer Cabinet Maker in
Grand Rapids,

William Haldane, the pioneer cabinet manu-
facturer in this city, died Saturday night at his
home on Jefferson avenue. His life has been
closely connected with the commercial develop-
ment of the city from 1836, the year of his re-
moval to Grand Rapids, until his death.
William Haldane was born in Delhi, N. Y.,
May 5, 1807. His early life was characterized
by an unaided but successful struggle for an
education. He early adopted the carpenter
trade and from this he gradually grew into the
furniture manufacturing trade. During the
early years of his life in the city he was en-
gaged in chair making. This was followed in
1847 by the introduction of furniture making
by machinery in Mr. Haldanes's shop on the
canal, just above Bridge street. He was mar-
ried Aug. 17, 1831 to Miss Sarah Tomlinson,
who died about two years ago.
Mr. Haldane was a active worker in the
Park Congregational church, having served
continually as deacon for fifty years. He leaves
two adopted daughters, Mrs William Perkins
of Buffalo, N. Y., and Mrs. J. T. Ferris of this
city.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 Tuesday
afternoon from the Park Congregational
church.
