Actor. Born in Huntsville Alabama, Harry Rhett Townes attended the University of Alabama in the 1930s, but later moved to New York to study acting at Columbia University. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he landed roles on the Broadway stage with "Tobacco Road," "Finian's Rainbow," and Twelfth Night." He later appeared in 16 movies, including "Santee," "Operation Manhunt," and "Heaven With A Gun." However, Townes found his real niche in television. He became a familiar face in the 1950s and 60s with a host of TV guest appearances and memorable roles in "Zane Grey Theater," "The Twilight Zone," "Perry Mason," "Star Trek," "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke," "The Big Valley," "The Fugitive," "The Virginian," and many others. His one recurring TV role was that of Russell Winston, on the 1986-87 season of "Knots Landing." A religious man in his off-screen life, Harry Townes was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1974 and served at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Hollywood, California. In the late 1980s, he returned to his hometown in Huntsville where he resided until his death.
