Knowlton Memorial Hall, also known as Ashford Town Hall, was built in 1924 with $100,000 given by Charles in honor of his Revolutionary War ancestors. (The town of Ashford had only 600 people.) It was dedicated only two weeks prior to his death.

The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, housed town offices, the public library and an auditorium. The Knowlton family had lived in the area since the 18th century.

Charles was the head of Hammond, Knowlton and Heminway Silk Mills and died at his home in Ashford.
