Georgia Martin Bates
Georgia Faye Martin Bates, 71, of McComb, died Aug. 16, 2012, at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in Monroe, La.
Visitation continues at noon today at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home of McComb until services there at 2 p.m. with Dr. Eddie Bates officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
Mrs. Bates was born Jan. 5, 1941, the daughter of Bessie Lee Goings Martin and Beacham Martin.
She was the second child after her sister Helen Martin Barber. She enjoyed the country life with her family, and countless times she shared her love of the woods, make-believe games and her daydreams of another time when things were simple.
Her parents divorced and her mother remarried Latimore Barber. The family grew to include two new baby sisters, Linda Fay Barber and Brenda Loise Barber.
Georgia attended Mount Hermon School. In April 1955, she married the love of her life, Clyde Burnin Bates. There were two children born to the marriage, her son Clyde Michael Bates, born on his mother’s birthday, and her daughter, Beverly Faye Bates Eymard, born June 25, 1960.
Mr. Bates was in the U.S. Air Force and the family traveled a lot during that time. They made their home in McComb, where they grew a prosperous business in interior decorating. The couple worked side by side for more than 50 years. Her charming personality and her ability to meet the public, along with her exquisite taste and eye for detail, earned her the trust of people from all walks of life. She was known for being able to transform any room into a show place. Of course, this also took a great upholsterer, Mr. Bates, to make her visions a reality.
After being diagnosed with small cell lung cancer she fought an amazing battle for almost two years and once again became an inspiration to those who were around her. She will forever be missed.
Survivors include her spouse, Clyde B. Bates; her son and daughter-in-law, Clyde Michael Bates and wife Kim; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Faye Bates Eymard and husband Michael; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Lacie and Raimy Eymard, Joshua and Dana Greer, Brandie and Jody Matherne, Courtney and Brady Antil, Christen Forrest Eymard, Chasity and Michael Albritton, Casie and Daniel Parker, Amber Bates Lewis, and Laynie and Josh Roan; 13 great-grandchildren, Nicole Eymard, Kathryn Eymard, Austin Greer, Avery Greer, Kylie Greer, Paige Matherne, Jace Matherne, Tyler Albritton, Grayson Albritton, Emma Grace Albritton, Jaxon Parker, Abby Lewis and Crew Roan; and numerous other relatives and friends.
