Mary Jane Hicks Guettner, 91 of New Midway Community in East Roane County passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013 at Roane Medical Center after falling at home. She was one of the oldest residents of the community having lived in the same house for 63 years. A native of Arcadia, Tennessee, she had come to Roane County as secretary to the K-25 Personnel Director during the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and spent 41 years teaching in Roane County schools, including Bradbury, Edgewood, Cherokee Hills and Kingston, She was a well-known pianist and organist having served as the organist for The Church of the Good Shepherd for many years and teaching piano and organ to dozens of students. Her teaching creed was to teach the three "R's"-respect, reverence and responsibility. She participated in many community and civic events during the years, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kingston. She was a long-time member of Kingston Baptist Church, but transferred her membership within the last few years to the nearby Mew Midway Baptist Church. She served as the Treasurer and Secretary for the Poplar Springs Cemetery Association for 50 years. She was the daughter of Rule M. and Della E. Hicks of Kingsport, Tennessee, born in the Reedy Creek area on July 27, 1921.

She is survived by one brother, Carl G Hicks of Kingsport
One sister, Betty Muto of Framingham, Massachusetts
Two sons and their wives, Patrick and Rachel of Washington State,
Jack and Kathy of Poplar Springs, Tennessee
Two grandsons, Chris and Mark
Five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral 7pm Wednesday June 12, 2013 at New Midway Baptist Church with Pastors Rod Garrett and Bro. Howard Huffine officiating. Burial 10am Thursday at Kingston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Wednesday at New Midway Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers family suggests memorials to New Midway Baptist Church 240 New Midway Road, Kingston, TN 37763 or Meals On Wheels Mid East Community Action Agency, Senior Nutrition Program, at P.O.
