RITES THURSDAY FOR SGT. EYLER - Highfield Soldier Was Killed In Action On April 17, 1945.

The body of SGT. LLEWELLYN C. EYLER, Highfield, who was killed in action in Germany April 17, 1945, is being returned home for reinternment.

The 30-year-old sergeant was serving with the 414th Infantry Regiment of the 104th Division when killed.

He was a native of Highfield, the son of Robert E. and Bessie (Flohr) Eyler. He had lived his entire life in the Highfield area until drafted for military service.

He was graduated from Smithsburg High School in 1934. Before entering the service he had been employed as a clerk at the Sweet Shoppe in Blue Ridge Summit.

Eyler was the second member of Waynesboro Lodge No. 731, B.P.O. Elks to pay the supreme sacrifice in the defense of his country.

He was inducted into the armed forces on April 15, 1941, eight months before Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the 140th Quartermasters Regiment, Service and Supply Company of the 29th Division. He took his basic training at Fort George G. Meade and then trained at Ft. Belvoir, Camp Lee and Camp Pickett, Va.

He left the United States in September, 1942. He served with the 147th Quartermasters Truck Company and was with that outfit until January 15, 1945, when he was transferred to the infantry.

He was a member of the Bethel Church of God.

Surviving are his parents, a sister, Mrs. Walter W. Spangler, Highfield and a brother, Robert Eyler, Jr., also of Highfield.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the St. Stephen's Reformed Church, Highfield, at 3 p.m. D.S.T., in charge of the Rev. Claude Corl. Interment will be made in Bethel cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded by Camp Ritchie Post, No. 239, American Legion.

Friends may call at the home Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 9 o'clock and Thursday afternoon from 1 o'clock until the hour of service, at the church.
