Denise Ann (Collins) King, age 62, was born in Humboldt, IA.

She passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She lived in several towns in Iowa while growing up, but she resided in Urbandale for the last 25 years. She graduated from Atlantic High School in 1969 and earned bachelor's degrees in education and sociology from UNI and Drake. She was united in marriage with Gary D. King on August 31, 1983, almost 30 years of marriage. They had two sons, Christopher Owen King (29) of Urbandale, and Mitchell Graham King (25) of Iowa City.

Denise was a licensed independent social worker, founding member of the Iowa United Professionals, active union member, member of NASW, League of Women Voters, Domestic Violence Coalition, and Sierra Club. She was a life-long advocate for children and the disabled. She retired in 2010 from the State of Iowa after more than 30 years as a child protective investigation social worker. In retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher with children with special needs.

Survivors in addition to her husband, Gary; and sons, Christopher and Mitchell; are her mother, Betty Lu Collins of Clive, IA; sisters, Diana (Mark) Collins-Bourret of Grants Pass, OR and Dory (Ross) Johnson of Clive; sisters-in-law, Darlene (Jim) Woltz of Canyon, TX, Cynthia (Calvin) Bierman of Des Moines, and Kara King of Churdan, IA; special family friends, Carmen (Jose) Reynoso of the Dominican Republic and Kristy Kilpatrick of Urbandale.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ray M. Collins and her brother-in-law, Wayne King.

Denise will be dearly missed by all of her nieces and nephews: Kate (Matt) Vukich of Fairfield, CA, John (Carrie) Bourret and daughter, Ashton,of Phoenix, AZ, Lauren and Taylor King of Churdan, and Collin, Emily, and Gavin Johnson of Clive.

Denise and Gary had any friends in the Hot air ballooning community. Denise dearly loved antiquing, nature, animals, family trips to Lake Okoboji and Arizona, shelling on the beaches of Florida, and she was an avid Iowa Hawkeye supporter. Her patience and gentle spirit will be forever remembered by the many lives she touched.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. Her funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 12 at Grace United Methodist Church, 3700 Cottage Grove, Des Moines, with the Reverend Bill Cotton and the Reverend Dave Swinton officiating. A luncheon will follow downstairs in the church. Inurnment will be made in Glendale Cemetery.
