Joseph M. Obertance, Jr. EAST LIVERPOOL - Joseph Michael "Obie" Obertance, Jr., 51, of East Liverpool, went to be with his Lord on Dec. 18, 2003 at 12:07 p.m., after fighting a valiant fight with Leukemia since July 26, 2003.

He was born June 5, 1952 in Toronto, Ohio, a son of the late Joseph Michael and Helen Ann (Kralovic) Obertance, Sr. Mr. Obertance was a 1970 graduate of Toronto High School; attended Mount Union College and Cleveland State University; worked for First Energy Corporation at the Bruce Mansfield Plant in Shippingport, PA, as a Instrument and Test Repairman for the past 28 and a half years. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 10, 1972 at Fort Knox, Kentucky through Oct. 9, 1974 at Fort Hood, Texas with the 2nd Armor Division. He was the last person officially drafted from Toronto when the draft was in effect.

He was a member of Hope Christian Fellowship, belonging to their A Study in Scriptures Group and the Civil War Group. He was a member of the IBEW Union No. 272; a member of the Toronto Jaycees; Area 9 Special Event Coordinator for the Special Olympics; the Columbiana County Genealogy Society; and the Maryland Genealogy Society; and also participated in the Edison Local Relay for Life Team.

Surviving is his wife, Arlene J. (Rice) Obertance, whom he married Dec. 19, 1987; a sister, Paula Lynne Obertance of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Michael L. Obertance of Toronto, Ohio; and his two black cats, Furry and Cricket.

Family will be present to receive friends at the Martin-MacLean-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 15827 St. Clair Avenue, Calcutta, OH 43920 on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 7-9 and Sunday, Dec. 21 from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home in Calcutta on Monday, Dec. 22, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mike Ross of the Hope Christian Fellowship officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel UPC Cemetery in Salineville, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord full military honors.
