Laurence Locke Doggett was named for his father's brother, who died at age 18 during the Civil War while a prisoner at Andersonville. Laurence entered Oberlin College in the fall of 1882. He was active in the Student Young Men's Christian Association, eventually becoming the association president. In 1889, he was a student at Union Theological Seminary, New York and he then returned to Oberlin Seminary in the fall of 1889 and graduated in 1890 with B. D. and M. A. degrees. In 1893 he became a student at the University of Berlin. After a semester, he enrolled at Leipzig University in Germany. In 1894, he married Carolyn Gillespie Durgin, daughter of Reverend DeWitt C. Durgin, president of Hillsdale College. She was a graduate of Oberlin and had an M. A. degree from Wellesley College. Laurence Doggett presented his thesis at Leipzig University: "A History of the Young Men's Christian Association" and was awarded his PhD. In 1896, he became president of the International Young Men's Christian Association College, Springfield, Massachusetts (now, known as Springfield College). He served in that capacity until 1936. In 1911, twenty-five years after his graduation from Oberlin College, he was awarded their honorary D. D. He was also recognized by the governments of Estonia “for valuable contributions to the welfare of Estonia,” and Czechoslovakia “for distinguished work among youth and for meritorious achievement.” A great deal is written regarding his tenure as the president of Springfield College.
