Guymon, Oklahoma – James A. Countryman, D.V.M., 79, passed away Monday afternoon, June 10, 2013 at the Morton County Special Care Unit, Elkhart, Kansas.

Born February 19, 1934 in Raton, New Mexico to Clarence and Ethel (Schroeder), Jim spent his young years in Hooker, Oklahoma, where he was active in football, baseball, FFA and was an outstanding student, graduating from Hooker High School in 1952. He did all these things while working and helping on the family farm, milking cows, and selling cream. After saving enough for his college tuition, Jim attended Panhandle Agricultural & Mechanical College, Goodwell for three years before attending Oklahoma A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in Stillwater. Countryman graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1960. The young Dr. Countryman was headed to Oregon to practice medicine before he met a cute, petite Registered Nurse in Oklahoma City. Nurse Dorothy Sue Bassham became Mrs. Jim Countryman on January 14, 1961 and the couple moved back to the Panhandle, where Jim joined Dr. Jim Atkins in the Guymon Veterinary Clinic. He retired in 2001.

God, family and others were Dr. Jim Countryman's motto and he was able to concentrate on all and balance them well. He was a lifelong Lutheran, serving in leadership and service at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on the Board of Elders, active in mission works, taught Sunday school for 30 years and served as a youth group sponsor.

With a busy vet practice and a growing family, Dr. Countryman was able to invest in his community. He continued to remember Hooker as his hometown, supporting their civic and school activities. In Guymon, Jim served on the Guymon School Board, served on the board of Memorial Hospital of Texas County, Guymon Chamber of Commerce, and was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club.

Before, during and after the Countryman children attended Guymon schools, Jim and Dorothy were strong boosters and active volunteers to all Guymon kids. Doc served and mentored athletes and students and supported Oklahoma Panhandle State in every way. He was an Aggie sports booster, a lifetime member of the Alumni Foundation, where he was honored into the Ambassador Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, business partner, and best friend, Dorothy Countryman; two daughters, Dr. Carol and husband, Dr. W.H. Kutteh of Germantown, Tennessee; Maria and husband, Todd Tillinghast of Monument, Colorado; a son, Mark Countryman and wife, Kimbra of Cypress, Texas; a brother, Clarence Countryman, Jr. of Bonham, Texas; and eight grandchildren, William, Michael, and John Kutteh; Matthew, Jonathan, Daniel, Benjamin, and Anna Caroline Tillinghast. He is also survived by two step-sisters, Phyllis Calvert Chase of Stillwater; Anna Bea Calvert and husband, W.D. Wells of Liberal, Kansas; brother-in-law, Dr. R.F. Harper of Edmond, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, Dr. and Mrs. Fred Northern, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Harper, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Harper, and their families; and adopted son, Jon Lyles of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Countryman, mother and step-father, Ethel and C.J. Calvert; mother and father-in-law, Betty and Frank Bassham; and a sister-in-law, Jimmie Harper.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, June 14th, 10:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1212 North Crumley, with Pastor Mark Wescoatt officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.

The Countryman family will receive friends for visitation at the Henson-Novak Funeral Home, 501 NW Fifth Street, Thursday evening, 6-7:30 PM.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, Dr. James A. Countryman Honorary Fund at OPSU Foundation, or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, c/o Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.
