US Congresswoman. A member of the Republican Party, she served Nevada's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 1997. She held the distinction as being the first woman from Nevada elected to the US Congress. Raised in Fort Dix, New Jersey, her father Thomas Farrell was a prominent general during World War II, her mother Ynez was a member of a well-known family in Southern California. After attending Manhattan College of the Sacred Heart, she became a businesswoman and later initiated her association with the Republican Party, when her interest in politics was founded. She gained experience in the political arena as a campaign strategist for US Senator Paul Laxalt (Nevada) during the 1970s and served as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in 1976 and 1980. During her tenure in Washington, she was a proponent of equality for women and fought to designate funding for early detection and treatment for breast cancer. She served as a member of the House Interior Committee.
