Born in Holyoke, he was a graduate of Holyoke High School and a 1915 graduate of Amherst College.
He was a past member of the Colony Club in Springfield. He was a member of the William Whiting Masonic Lodge in Holyoke.
He later moved to Woodstock, Vt., where he lived 25 years and was active with the Calvin Coolidge Foundation.
Robert Fowler, president of Hampden Paper in Holyoke, last night said of Whiting , "I knew him as a child, socially. He was a hell of a man."
"I remember him as a kind and gentle man," Fowler said, adding that he remembers Whiting as "a great singer" at social events such as Christmas parties.
Whiting's father, William Whiting, served as Secretary of Commerce in the Coolidge Administration.
He was a Navy veteran of World War I.
He moved to Wellesley in 1986.
The paper company was founded in 1865.
His wife, the former Mary Fowler Whiting, died in 1987.
He leaves two sons, George F. of Dover, and William Whiting Jr. of Newport Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
A private funeral will be in Forestdale Cemetery in Holyoke.
