MISSION LOSS CIRCUMSTANCES: On the 24 August 1944, the B-17 "GRAHAM CRACKER", S/N 43-37593, left for a bombing mission of oil plants in Merseberg, GER. OWEN LEE GRAHAM was the pilot, HOWARD B. PARKER was the bombardier. As the plane was headed back, it was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Due to the heavy damage to "Graham Cracker," it crashed in Barnstaedt (west of Meresburg) at 12:30.
Seven of the crew members were found dead, two had parachuted out before the crash (they were captured by the Germans). The seven dead crew members were buried on 25 August 1944 in the Village Cemetery at Barnstaedt. In 1945 the the bodies were disinterred and reinterred in the U.S. Military Cemetery at Margraten, Holland.

In 1948 the U.S. Government notified the next of kin of Armed Forces buried overseas the option of leaving the remains buried in American Military Cemeteries or returned to the U.S. for final burial. Howard B. Parker's remains were shipped to the U.S. for burial in Marietta, GA. The final burial took place on 26 AUGUST 1949 with full military honors.
