Thomas was a Civil War veteran. He first enlisted on September 1, 1862, and mustered in as a Private in Company E, 16th Vermont Volunteers. He mustered out on Auagust 10,1863, He re-enlisted in 1864, and mustered in on august 3 as a Private in Company I, 3rd. Vermont. He mustered out on June 19, 1865.
