World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Leamington Spa, England, he served as a Private in the 5th Battalion, British Duke of Wellington's Regiment, British Army. On September 28, 1918, during a counter attack at the Canal de St. Quentin Marcoing, France, Private Tandey's platoon was stopped by German machine gun fire. On his own, Private Tandey crawled forward destroyed the gun position and then reaching the canal crossing, he restored the plank bridge under heavy fire. In the evening, he and eight comrades were surrounded by an overwhelming number of the enemy. Although twice wounded, he led a bayonet charge forcing 37 of the enemy to surrender. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on December 14, 1918. Also of note although disputed, after the Battle at Marcoing France, in October 1914, Private Tandey encountered a weary and wounded German soldier when he wandered into his line of fire. The enemy soldier did not even attempt to raise his own rifle and Tandey chose not to shoot. The German soldier saw Tandey lower his rifle and nodded his thanks before wandering off. That German soldier is purported to have been Adolf Hitler. In 1938, when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain visited Adolf Hitler at his alpine retreat, he asked Chamberlain to convey his best wishes and gratitude to Tandey. After the war, Tandey spent the next 38 years as Commissionaire at the Standard Motor Company. He died at age 86 in Corventry, England.
