Count Carl Emil Kirk Von Donop, hessian colonel, led the battle for the british against fort mercer. Taking his army to Cooper's Point,Camden on the morning of October 21,1777. They marched down haddon avenue towards haddonfield, staying overnight there, he than marched south on kings highway though mt. ephraim to westville. Americans destroyed the bridge over timber creek and held ground there. Changing direction to clements bridge rd. through barrington and runnemede, thence to woodbury, arriving about 3 in the afternoon on October 22,1777.
He attacked at once with 2000 men on the fort. The fort was defended by only 400 men,led by Colonel Christoper Greene. The battle lasted only 40 minutes. At the end, only 37 americans were wounded or dead. High casualties among hessians included Colonel Donop. He was taking to the whitall house and cared for,until moved to a house at woodbury creek, where he died there on October 29,1777.
Upon Donop's death, Colonel Greene ordered the body be returned to the fort and be buried with full military honors, he is interred between the whitall house and the main fort, his feet facing the river. The headstone is no longer remaining.
The battle of red Bank, that Colonel Donop lost his life, protected philadelphia from the enemy.
