Born in Muskogee, OK to William and Minnie (Campbell) Vanzant on January 15, 1947 Alice was raised and educated in her birth community graduating from Muskogee High School and going on to earn her Master's Degree in Education from Northeastern State University. Rogers County was her home for 36 years where she followed her passion of teaching elementary school children at Foyil Public Schools for 24 years until retiring in 2007.
On December 28, 1968 in Tulsa, OK Alice married Robert Johns and this union was gifted with two children creating a large blended family with five children. Alice loved being a mother and treasured her children. Holidays were always a cherished time; her favorite holidays included Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter as each of these focused on family and reminded her of how truly blessed she was. Also, Alice was a huge St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
Alice found much satisfaction in a number of different interests – gardening, fishing, croqueting, bunco and her Australian Shepherds but none could surpass the enjoyment she derived from spending countless hours with her grandchildren. Alice enjoyed having meals with family and friends-her favorite meals included Mexican food and Seafood. She often made family favorites during the holidays.
This loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and teacher will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Alice is survived by her husband of 44 years Robert; her children Lisa Steelhammer and husband Greg of Oklahoma City, Rob Johns and wife Perilyn of Branson, Nena Frow of Tulsa, Carolyn Cooke and husband Randy of Bixby, and Stephanie Johns of Claremore; grandchildren Abbey and Ethan Steelhammer, Christian Reifschneider, Luke Johns, Donnie Clark, Matt Clark and wife Eva, Robert Cooke and wife Amber, two great grandchildren Audrey Cooke and Edie Clark; her brother Dan Porter and wife Miranda.
