Achsa WITTER was born on 2 December 1787 in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Elijah WITTER and Elizabeth STORY. She married Samuel Galloway, born in 1784 in Massachusetts the son of John and Mary (Reynolds) Galloway. He was a minister for Society of Christians, also called a Newlight preacher.

In 1814 they left New York to live in Union Township, Union County, Ohio. Soon after moving there, Samuel was injured in a hunting incident. He recovered but was never able to do heavy manual labor. A short time later Samuel went back to New York on a preaching tour. While on this arduous tour he took sick and died, leaving Achsah, to care for her small children, almost to the charity of the world, in a new country with scarcely anything except her own hands and a willing heart."

Achsah remained in Union County until 1822. At that time, she became fascinated with the Shaker movement and moved to their settlement (called Union Village) in Warren County, Ohio where she raised her children to adulthood. Achsah Gallaway is listed as a Signer of the Covenant at Union Village, Warren County, Ohio on December 31, 1829. She and her daughter, Sabrah, remained throughout their lives without marrying, a firm believer in their faith, which did not believe in marriage. All of the other children became dissatisfied with Shaker beliefs (one of which was to remain single). They left the Shakers, married and settled in life. You can find them listed on the 1850 census in Turtle Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio. Achsah died on 30 December 1877 in the Shaker Village, Warren County, Ohio, USA, enjoying the best of health up to the time of her death.
