Alvin F. Thorp, Jr., 71, of 7 Pheasant Run Drive, Shipley Farms, died Tuesday of a heart attack at home.

Mr. Thorp was a lead burner at Allied Chemical Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and Mid-County Senior Center.

He served in the 9th Division, 60th Infantry, during World War II and fought in eight major European battles, including the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mae; a son, Keith Robert at home; a daughter, Kathy L. Stirparo of Holly Oak; and two brothers, Robert G. of Wilmington and Joseph M. of Philadelphia.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Immanuel Baptist Church, Pennsylvania and Greenhill avenues, where friends may call from noon. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, 33rd and Market streets.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Immanuel Baptist church, Wilmington.
