Gerald was born to John Henry and Elsie (Gellerman) Nothdurft on October 20, 1930 in rural Cheyenne County Kansas. He was an only child but had cousins around he could get into mischief with, especially his cousin John Rambat. He completed 8th grade and his father told him if he started high school he would have to finish high school and he didn't think he could handle another 4 years of school so he quit. It was a decision he later regreted and made sure his children at least finished high school. He served in the Korean War as light truck driver. He married Georgia Hoffman in June 1960 and they had two daughters. He was a truck driver, gas station attendant, worked on farms and in feedlots until his retirement. He enjoyed watching rodoes both on TV and in person. He was a member of the Beef Empire Days Rodeo Committee in Garden City, Kansas until his death. Gerald died February 12, 2003 after his second battle with lung cancer.
