DAVENPORT, Va. Burl Presley, age 90, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at his residence. Born in Davenport, he was a son of the late Elbert and Octavia Cook Presley. He was a member of Civilian Conservation Corps, a United States Marine WWII Veteran having served in the South Pacific, an active member of the Grundy American Legion Post No. 164, and 8th District Commander from 1999-2000, for the state of Virginia. Mr. Presley had a degree in tool and die engineering and retired from General Motors in Dayton, OH in 1978. He self-designed the Davenport Fire and Rescue Squad buildings and was instrumental in acquiring the land. He also built the local pharmacy and health clinic in Davenport. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest, Claude, Kermit, Orba, Earl, and Virgil; and sisters, Myrtle, Iskey, Faye, and Gladys; and infant siblings, Chlovis and Cloya. Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Fontelle Presley; daughters, Donna Presley of Dayton, Ohio, Karen (Al) Gayoso of Loveland, Ohio, and Sheryl (John) Sweat of Many, La.; a son, Kyle Presley of the home; grandsons, John and Michael Bruning, Joshua Burl (Candice) Sweat, Shane (Kristina) MacDonald, and Eric MacDonald; and great-grandchildren, Isiah, Taylor, John M., Brooke, Alexandra, and Aubrey. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at Haysi Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Burmeier officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, June 9, starting at 6 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.haysifuneral.com.
