Elmer Nelson, age 91, of Hendricks, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Hendricks Community Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks with Rev. Dr. David Christianson and Amanda Simons leading the service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in East Hendricks Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Bakken Engen American Legion Post 103.

Elmer was born November 12, 1921, the son of Arthur & Hilda (Heggeseth) Nelson in Minneota, MN. He graduated from Minneota High School and then entered the US Army and served in World War II, European Theater, in the infantry and as a paratrooper. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to farming in rural Hendricks. He married Bernice Oien on June 22, 1947. They continued to farm while Elmer also worked for the US Postal Service as a clerk in Hendricks, a city carrier in Brookings, SD and retired as the Postmaster in Astoria, SD in 1991.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Astoria American Legion, the League of Postmasters and National Association of Letter Carriers. In his younger years, he was a Council member and Treasurer at Calvary Lutheran Church, Hendricks Township Treasurer, Election Judge, New Grove 4-H Leader and was in the church choir at Hemnes Lutheran Church in Minneota, MN and also served as a soloist there.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Bernice; two daughters, Carol (Bob) Kreager and Sandra (Greg) Kimmet; three grandchildren, Mark Kreager, Amanda (David) Simons and Samantha Kimmet; one great grandson, Elliot Kreager; two step grandchildren, Sandra Actis and David Kreager; two step great grandsons, Evan & Nathan Actis; one godson, Henry (Barb) Hanson; one goddaughter, Stacy (Troy) Johnson Thompson; In-laws, John and Marlys Huber and June Reed; numerous nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Leslie (Carmen) Nelson, Elsie (Oren) Hanson, Dorothe (Alan) Carlson and infant son, Donald.
