Rebecca Jane Rice was born on November 17, 1851, Union, Izard County, Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Rice and Nancy Providence. She married Samuel James Wells on June 7, 1865 at Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. Becky and Sam were the parents of Nancy Frances (1867) John A. (1868) Sophronia (1870) Etta (1871) Emmett James (1873) Mary E. (1874) Mollie (1877) Hiram Samuel (1879) Julia Ann (1881) Nellie Jane (1883) Charles C. (1886) and Walter Frank (1889). Sam passed away the month Walter was born. To support the family, Becky operated a boarding house the West Plains, Howell County, Missouri area. In 1913 she married Wilson P. Deardorf who preceded her in death in 1926.
Mrs. Deardorf passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Fred Shadwell (Julia) on December 24, 1928 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. She was survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Elijah Smith (Nancy) and Mrs. William B. Barrett (Nellie) both of West Plains and five sons; John Wells of British Honduras, South America, Emmett Wells of Bigbear, Osage, OK, Hiram Samuel Wells of Monette, Craighead County, AK, Charles Wells of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, and Walter Wells of Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas. Both husbands, four daughters, Sophronia, Mary, Mrs. Henry Ax (Etta) of Seattle, King County, WA and Mrs. Arthur Tupper (Mollie) of Springfield, MO preceded her in death.
