Massachusetts Governor, US Ambassador. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 69th Governor of Massachusetts from 1997 to 2001. After graduating from the Boston College School of Management in 1970, he attained his law degree from Boston College Law School three years later. Cellucci went onto work at his family's automotive dealership in addition to serving with the United States Army Reserves. He developed an interest in politics and was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1976. In 1984 he won a seat in the state senate and in 1990, he became Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. Cellucci succeeded William F. Weld as Massachusetts' governor when Weld accepted a nomination from President Clinton to serve as ambassador to Mexico (he was never confirmed by the Senate and never served at that capacity). During his governorship, Cellucci fought to reduce government spending and was an advocate of education reform in addition to making health care more available. In 2001, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the United States Ambassador to Canada. He remained at that capacity until 2005. He had been suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) for the last few years of his life and succumbed from complications.
