Son of William Henry Winkler and Martha Cook. It has been said by family members that Les was a gentle giant until WWII. He came home from the battlefield in Italy (WWII) suffering from what then was called "shell-shock" aka Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. At the time, there was little, if any, medical treatment recommended for "shell-shock" victims.

My only memory of Les is that of him holding me in his lap as he put my feet into a new pair of brown high-top lace-up shoes he'd brought me. He called Granny (Martha Cook Winkler) and the two of them had a long -- (or so it seemed to me at the time) -- conversation about those shoes. Standing me up on Granny's dining room table, several times they had me walk back and forth across the table. Sometimes they'd stop me and press to press a thumb against the toe box. Finally, they decided those shoes fit me "just fine". Then Les picked me up, put my arms around his shoulders, carried me into the living room, and swung me out as he turned around and round. I remember his laugh. I think the laugh is why I remember that event. I'm told the next morning he caught a bus and went to Fort Worth where he was hit by a car. rahw

In 1947 Les got off a city bus in Fort Worth and was struck by a car driven by the secretary of a federal judge. The driver claimed she did not see the bus drop-off passengers and did not see the passengers crossing the street. Considered to be an "unavoidable accident", the driver was not ticketed. A quadriplegic, Les died from complications of the injuries sustained in the accident.
