HIAWATHA
__George W. Kauffman, 86, of Hiawatha, died peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service and rosary will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, where friends may visit with the family following until 8 p.m. Friends may also visit with the family at the church on Friday after 9 a.m.
__George is survived by his wife, Mary; eight children, Rita (Harry) Holmes of Palo, William (Janet) Kauffman of Springville, Theresa (Dave) Urban of Springville, Anita (Gene) Meeker of Central City, Gregory (Debbie) Kauffman of Clearfield, Utah, Christina (Wallace) Morris of Milton, Fla., Dennis (Teri) Kauffman of Belle Plaine and Laura (Ron Johnson) of Cedar Rapids; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Russell; and three sisters, Anola Keegan, Faye Sperfslage and June Auman.
__He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Rebecca Kauffman; brothers, Lowell, Cyril, James Warren and Clark; and sister, Majorie McDowell.
__George William was born April 29, 1927, in Colesburg, the son of Wayne C. and Lucille M. (Landis) Kauffman. He married Mary Wieneke on Oct. 28, 1950, in Fairfax. After working for 10 years as a purchasing agent for Rainbow Baking Co., he retired in 1989. George was also owner and operator of the Shell/Conoco gas station on Mount Vernon Road and 15th Street, as well as Kauffman Hardware in Hiawatha on Center Point Road.
__He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Optimist Club, and the Knights of Columbus. George enjoyed spending his time visiting with people, playing cards and crosswords, dancing, drawing designs on cards, writing poetry, watching airplanes, as well as traveling. He liked the country and western music style and the beauty of fall colors.
