Gertrude M. Fontaine, 90, of Derby died on May 29, 2013, in Newport.

She was born on July 9, 1922, in Newport, a daughter of Charles and Mary Ann (Gokey) Cheney. On December 29, 1947, she married Lawrence Fontaine, who survives her.

Mrs. Fontaine was postmaster for the United States Postal Service in the town of Morgan, where she retired after 12 years of service. She also worked as a telephone operator for several years in Troy.

She enjoyed cooking, much to the delight of her family and friends. She knitted 11,000 pair of mittens for charity and formerly worked on upholstery.

She and Mr. Fontaine made several trips to Florida over many years during the winter months. She was always willing to give a hand to her friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence Fontaine of Derby; her children: Stephen Fontaine and his wife, Patsy, of Beecher Falls, Dennis Fontaine and his wife, Nancy, of Twin Mountain, New Hampshire, and Laurie Fontaine of Derby; her grandchildren: Melanie Walker and her husband, David, Stephen Fontaine and his wife, Lauren, Sarah Fontaine, Bryan Fontaine, and Adam Fontaine; her great-grandchildren: Jacob, Jonathan, and Jessalyn Walker, and Tyler and Gavin Fontaine; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Sherman Fontaine; a grandson, Matthew Fontaine; and by the following siblings: Earl Cheney, Nelson Cheney, Maynard Cheney, Edna Liberty, and Rita Berthiaume.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Derby Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport, on June 6, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
