Entered into rest on July 11, 2002, Raymond Ashton Groomes, son of Mrs. Elizabeth "Joy" Groomes Batchelor and the stepson of Mr. Michael Usry of Graniteville, and was the brother of the late Brandon Batchelor.
Survivors include a brother, Andrew Batchelor of Belvedere; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Carol Groomes of North Augusta, Brenda Reese of Augusta, and Karen Hostetler of Florida; one maternal great-grandmother, Ruby Nichols of Augusta. Paternal great-grandparents include Sonney and Kathy Batchelor of Augusta, David and Sharon Handy of Myrtle Beach, and Ella Bell of Myrtle Beach. He was the nephew of Raymond Ashley and Shanna Groomes of North Augusta, Kevin and Kelli Burgess of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. and Michael and April Burgess of Augusta, Frank and Traci Muza of Beech Island, and Thomas Groomes of Orlando, Fla. He was the great nephew of Ricky and Brenda Groomes and Dale and Brenda Thomson all of North Augusta, Roger and Linda Lambert of Warrenville, and Ronnie and Judy Groomes of Graniteville. Paternal step-aunts and uncles, Barry and Kim Payton, Kris and Paulette Usry, and Rodney Payton all of Graniteville. Raymond is also survived by his cousins and special friends.
Ashton was a student and a graduate of the Georgetown Marine Institute. He loved playing baseball and fishing. He eventually wanted to join the U.S. Air Force.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m., in the Midland Valley First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. James McCary officiating. Interment in Sunset Memory Gardens
Pallbearers will be Morgan Hooks, Josh Waller, Adam Stoll, Dave Grammar, Rubuen Rickenbaker, and Jarod Sowell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Groomes, Ronnie Groomes, and Tommy Groomes.
