Joseph A. (Joe) Johnson, 90, of Abingdon, VA., passed away Saturday, December 01, 2007, at his residence. He was born on October 29, 1917 in Mooresville, N.C., to Charles R. and Mollie Honeycutt Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Marian Eller Johnson; his son, Marion Eller (Whitie) Johnson; four sisters; and two brothers.

Joe owned and operated Abingdon Motor Company before retiring in 1973.
He was active within the Abingdon community where he was on the Town Council and Mayor of the Town of Abingdon. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates for four terms. He served on the Virginia Highlands Airport Commission, the Board of Directors of Washington County and Central Fidelity Banks, and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a charter member of the Abingdon Chapter of Kiwanis. He was a longtime member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church where he served numerous terms as an elder.

Survivors include his son Joseph A. (Jay) Johnson, Jr. and his wife Karen of
Abingdon; a sister, Gwen Warren of Douglasville, GA.; brothers, Charles B.
Johnson of Sanford, N.C., and J.P. Johnson of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren; Chris Johnson of Boston, MA., Jeff Johnson and wife Lisa of Abingdon, VA., Jay Johnson and wife Amanda of Birmingham, AL., Jennifer Thompson and husband Greg of Abingdon, VA., and Mary C. Johnson of Bristol, TN.; two step-grandchildren; Jeremy Houser and wife Jessica of Hickory, N.C., and Joshua Houser of Falls Church, VA.; seven great grandchildren; devoted friend Peggy Wagner; and several nieces and
nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be conducted on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J.P. Johnson and the Rev. Robert R. Tolar, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Chris Johnson, Jeff Johnson, Jay Johnson, Greg Thompson, Jeremy Houser, and Joshua Houser. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Sam Miller, George Rogers Stuart, Sonny Porterfield, and John Bundy.
