Sister of Robert Gould Shaw, Colonel of the 54th Mass. Inf., one of the first black regiments to see action in the Civil War. They would gain notoriety and fame in the movie "Glory" in which their formation and experiences up to and including the heroic and tragic assault on Battery Wagner, James Island, S.C. is depicted. Anna married George William Curtis, a very influential writer and speaker on social and political issues of the day. He was also one of the founders of the republican party which held some of it's first meetings near his home on Staten Island, N.Y. He also became head of the board of education and remained active until near the end of his life.
