The picture is of Thomas (on the left) and his son, John Battaile (on the right.)

Thomas was a Captain and 1st Lieutenant. (Black Hawk War) He was in the "Old Battalion" with Major Thomas James. Edward Todd (b. 1808) was with Thomas when they marched 350 miles to the mouth of the Fox River.

NOTE: Edward Todd is our 4x great grandfather, brother to Thomas Todd who lived on the American Bottom in Monroe County, Illinois. Thomas had 4 daughters and Ann Todd was a 2nd marriage to Thomas before she died in 1839.

On the Widow's Pension from the military, it shows that Thomas had been born in Hampshire, Virginia.

Sources: Family Memoirs compiled by Jonathan Binkley. Letters from Jonathan Binkley and Scott VanDelinder. General Affidavits offered by his widow, Catharine E. DeLauney Wilson Harrison. Certificate of Record of Marriage: filed on 20 Nov. 1893. Affidavit dictated by Rachel (Rachael) Tomlinson when she was 75 yrs. old. Rachel lived in Lanark, Carroll Co., IL at the time (23 Nov 1893). The document states that she, Rachel, was living with her Uncle Thomas (Harrison) in 1837 when Tom's wife, Ann Bond died. The document says she, Rachel, is one of Thomas's brothers daughter. (Thomas's oldest brother was George William Harrison who lived in Pickaway Co, Ohio.)

The 4 biggest Harrison lines are: The President line, the Cuthbert line, the Long Island (Oyster Bay) line and the Battaile line. I feel sure that Thomas descends from one of these lines (leaning heavily toward the Battaile line but open to the Cuthbert line as well.) Thomas and some of his siblings were born in Hampshire, Virginia (West Virginia). "Grandpa " Thomas was pioneer-bred and born. He was carried over the Allegheny Mountains in a basket slung over the back of a pack mule. His twin brothers were on the other side to balance him. Their names were Obed and Vincent." They moved across Pennsylvania and then into Ohio and settled in Ross, Pickaway, and Fayette County. Some went onto Southern Illinois and then on up to the Northwest corner of Illinois in Jo Daviess County and up to Dubuque and into Iowa.
