PJ: 1/5/2004: Gerry: Harlow C. Gage, 95, of Gerry, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 in his home.
He was born March 3, 1908 in Stockton, the son of Chauncy and Mable Langworthy Gage.
A Chautauqua County resident most of his life, he attended grade school in Dewittville, was a 1926 graduate of Mayville High School, and a 1930 graduate of Bliss Electrical School in Washington.
He was employed by the Welchs Corp. for 13 years, and was a self-employed farmer, raising vegetables and flowers, and sold vegetables and gladiola bulbs at area markets for more than 30 years. He ran a saw mill and maple sugar bush in Dewittville, was an apiarist for more than 50 years, selling honey and lecturing at schools about bee keeping. He had also been employed by his son at Don Gage's for many years.
He taught Sunday school while at the Dewittville United Methodist Church and sang with the Men's Quartet. He was presently attending the Gerry United Methodist Church. Along with his wife, they were the last two members of the Dewittville Anniversary Club, the last charter members of the Gerry Rodeo City Senior Citizens, and a past Pleasantville 4-H leader.
A devout Christian, he enjoyed working with wood and built two houses, and ice and row boat, and numerous crafts and projects for friends and family. Harlow was a devoted family man and enjoyed listening to his great-granddaughter, Lauren E. Nelan, play the violin.
He was preceded in death by his son, Donald A. Gage who died Feb. 5, 2003; a grandson, Rick D. Gage who died July 20, 1975; and a sister, Cecile Chapman.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. The Rev. John Rough, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
