Per his obituary (Roseville Press-Tribune, June 7, 2006), Howard was an active member of the agriculture industry in Placer County since childhood, growing cherries, nectarines, peaches, apricots, plums, pluots, oriental pears, persimmons, lemons, and mandarin oranges. He was also member and chairman of the California State Board of Forestry, member and chairman of the Blue Anchor Inc., and the Fruit and Nut Farming Representative for the county. Upon his father's death, Howard helped raise his siblings Takuro, Chiyo, Tatsuya, and Miyo. With his first wife Spring, Howard was the father of Carol, Russell, and Glenn. With his second wife Barbara, he was stepfather to Jan, Sheila, Georgia, Arlie, Reynold, Joseph, and Ramona. Howard also had 34 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
