William was a Civil War veteran. From October 23, 1862 through August 10 1863 he served as a Private in Company E, 16th Vermont Infantry.

In December, 1863, William married Julia Baldwin in Chester, Vermont. On January 3, 1865, he re-enlisted, and one week later he mustered in as a Private with Company F, 26th New York Cavalry (Frontier Cavalry). He mustered out on June 27, 1865.

William and Julia did not have any children.
