Obituary
Marvin Davis, the son of Saul and Cora Lillian (Smith) Davis, was born on June 4, 1927, in Wellston, Oklahoma. He was the seventh of eight children born to this union. He attended school in the public school systems in Oklahoma and he graduated from Lincoln High School in San Diego, CA. His high school tenure was shared with helping the family make ends meet and helping his mother pay the bills, while his father worked in California. He also attended San Diego Mesa College, and American Urban Bible College.
Marvin was always considered to be different than the other youngsters- so much, that they called him an oddball. At the tender age of 7, although he did not answer, Marvin felt the calling to the ministry to preach the gospel and at this time his peers began to call him "preacher", often calling on him to offer words of comfort to their deceased pets. Marvin would often reminisce about his youth and compared himself to the stone that the builders rejected, and the stone eventually becoming the "Chief Cornerstone".
His mother, who was a devoted Christian and who loved the Lord laid the foundation for Marvin to be of service to the church, for she required all of her children to be obedient to God.
On July 4, 1953 Marvin married the love of his life, Billie Joyce Connor and to this union 9 children were born.
Marvin was an entrepreneur, he owned his own barbershop, sold watermelons and was a construction worker specializing in brick masonry. In his community, he hired the homeless to clean up the property and paid them minimum wage. Marvin loved playing pool and was a member of a local pool league. He used it as part of his witnessing tactic.
In 1957, Marvin relocated his family to San Bernardino, CA and they became members of the New Canaan Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder C. L. Williams. After a short stay in San Bernardino, Marvin and his family moved to San Diego, CA and he and his family became members of the House of Refuge Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder A. D. Kirkpatrick where he was a prayer warrior. Many were saved in this prayer ministry. It was at the House of Refuge that God called Elder Davis into the ministry and after serving under Elder A. D. Kirkpatrick, he moved on to work with Supt. A. D. Cooper at the Antioch Church of God in Christ. While a faithful servant and willing worker at Antioch, Elder Davis was asked to Pastor Zion Hill Church of God in Christ. After serving as pastor of Zion Hill, he organized the Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ. In May of 2008, Elder Davis celebrated 43 years as pastor of Mason Memorial.
In addition to pastoring, Elder Davis served in the following capacities in the Greater Antioch District; Evangelist Department President, Union Fellowship President and Financier.
Marvin was a family man that loved his wife; children; grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Dad" by his wife and "Grandpapa'' by his grandchildren. Two children, Marvin and Kenneth preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of fifty-five years, Billie Joyce Davis; twelve children, Theresa Davis-McMillian of Raleigh, NC, Schnetta Cooper, Sabrina Davis of San Diego, CA, Marva Owens (Samuel) of Jacksonville, Florida, Tanya Davis of Camden County, NC, Marvin Davis of Covington, Virginia, Jody Davis of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Adrian Davis, Paul Davis and Donna Davis of San Diego, CA; One brother, James Davis of Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Ella Mae Davis of San Bernardino, CA and Dorothy Mae Davis of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, sixty-eight grandchildren, sixty- two great grandchildren, many god children, hosts of nieces, nephews and the Mason Memorial COGIC family and The Greater Antioch District Family.
