Richard was born on April 21, 1933, in Wilbur, Wash. to Harry and Elsye Carstensen. They lived in Almira as wheat farmers, raising their son to take over the farm. He graduated from Almira High School in 1951 and from WSU at Pullman in 1955. He then spent two years in the Army; one of those in Germany.

Richard was a wheat farmer for 42 years, retiring in 1998. He was a hard worker and liked wheat farming very much. He was a member of the Wheat Growers for many years.

He was an avid card player, gardener (especially roses), did puzzles of all kinds, and enjoyed traveling- Australia was a favorite. He liked going on snowmobile rides with family and friends on the hills of the farm during the day or on starry nights. Trips with friends, when one of them planned a two or three-day surprise adventure, was also a highlight of each summer for 14 years. Another of his hobbies was woodworking; he made a variety of beautiful things including toys. Richard and Delores retired to Spokane in 1999.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Almira Community Church in Almira, Wash. on September 18th at 1 p.m. Donations on Richard's behalf can be made to the Almira Fire Department in Almira, WA 99103 or Lutheran Community Services, 210 W. Sprague, Spokane, WA 99201.
